Free Introductory Courses from Interactive Metronome

Interactive Metronome is currently offerring three free introductory courses for OT/COTAs, SLP/SLPAs, PT/PTAs, ATCs, Educators, Licensed Rehabilitation, Medical, and Mental Health Professionals, Psychiatrists, Neurologists, Psychologists, and Chiropractic Care Professionals.

A. Introduction to the Interactive Metronome- History & Research

Course Description:
This presentation will review the clinical research supporting the role of rhythm and timing on a wide array of human function. In addition, this session will provide an overview of the use of rhythm and timing exercises (specifically the Interactive Metronome) that have been shown to improve cognitive and motor function in pediatric and adult rehabilitation. We will give examples of IM’s use in speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the research supporting the importance of rhythm and timing (motor planning and sequencing) to all areas of rehabilitation
  • State the correlation between rhythm and timing deficits and cognitive and motor deficiencies
  • Be aware of the role of advanced technology in improving rehabilitation outcomes

Course Meets Requirements for:
1.0 Contact Hours SLP/SLPA (ASHA) = 0.1 CEUs
1.0 Contact Hours OT/COTA (AOTA) = 0.1 CEUs
1.0 Contact Hours AT (BOC) = 1.0 CEUs

B. Introduction to IM Pediatric Best Practices

Course Description:
This course will introduce participants to temporal processing theory and research. Participants will be guided through basic information pertaining to use of the Interactive Metronome with infants and children, with special consideration for modifications to content structure, duration and environment. Ideas will be shared re: clinical application and case studies will illustrate application of pediatric best practices within the context of IM treatment for timing and rhythm to enhance overall treatment outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the principles of temporal processing training to pediatric clients.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of modifications necessary for enhanced success with the pediatric population.
  • Develop motivational strategies for success of Pediatric IM application
  • Integrate IM treatment for timing & rhythm into discipline-specific treatment plans.

Course Meets Requirements for:
1.0 Contact Hours SLP/SLPA (ASHA) = 0.1 CEUs
1.0 Contact Hours OT/COTA (AOTA) = 0.1 CEUs
1.0 Contact Hours AT (BOC) = 1.0 CEUs

C. Introduction to Interactive Metronome & Gait Mate: Tools to Improve Cognitive & Motor Function

Course Description:
The IM Gait Mate is a tool designed to assess and treat an individual’s planning, sequencing, and motor coordination while ambulating. The Gait Mate provides rhythmic auditory stimulation to facilitate improved gait cadence, step length, and walking speed. Guide sounds provide biofeedback to cue the client if they are off the beat. Gait Mate improves motor planning and sequencing by using neuro-sensory and neuro-motor exercises developed to promote neuroplasticity. The purpose of this course is to introduce the benefits of the Interactive Metronome and Gait Mate when treating clients with planning, sequencing, and coordination impairments.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review timing structures of the brain involved in mental and interval timing skills. Discuss the importance of mental and interval timing skills to efficiently perform activities of daily living.
  • Review desired outcomes when using Gait Mate during therapy sessions.
  • Review a case study highlighting how to incorporate Interactive Metronome and Gait Mate into treatment sessions to improve motor coordination, balance, timing, and gait biomechanics.

Course Meets Requirements for:
1.0 Contact Hours OT/COTA (AOTA) = 0.1 CEUs
1.0 Contact Hours AT (BOC) = 1.0 CEUs
